Project

At the beginning of October 2019, the starting signal was given for the "CityRiver" pilot project in Donauwörth.

The project area in and along the Danube extends from the „Wildnis“ and the „Donauspitz“ to the confluence of the Zusam river, specifically between river kilometers 2510 and 2508.6. The „CityRiver“ project runs until 2023 and is funded by LIFE, an EU program for the environment, nature conservation, and climate policy. The total cost of the project amounts to approximately four million euros, with the EU covering 55 percent of the eligible costs.
The objective of the project is to enhance the river habitat in urban areas. In urban settings, rivers are usually confined to narrow beds with steep, artificial banks. As a result, the river is difficult for citizens to access, and there are few suitable habitats for flora and fauna. An additional problem is the frequent deepening of the riverbed (erosion). The „CityRiver“ project aims to counteract these issues in the fields of ecology, hydraulic engineering, and socio-economics.
