Community involvement is a vital component of this project. This is achieved primarily through the provision of information and active participation. Goals, measures, and individual steps are presented as transparently as possible—chiefly here on this website, but also on platforms like Facebook—and distributed via press releases and the municipal newsletter.
Interested residents of Donauwörth can get involved during information evenings. Furthermore, workshops and public surveys on specific topics are planned. Stakeholders, such as local residents and water sports enthusiasts, will be directly included in the process. Our goal is to ensure that all participants identify with the project’s objectives and measures.
Current Activity: We are currently conducting a survey to evaluate the landscape scenery and recreational value of the Danube.

After the construction schedule was presented by the engineering firm at the TKSV premises, the planner gathered suggestions and feedback for the design of the CityRiver measures.
On September 9, it was announced how the measures within the „CityRiver“ project will proceed now that the bed stabilization construction work is underway. The specific steps were explained firsthand by representatives from LEW, the Institute for Floodplain Ecology (Aueninstitut), and the engineering firm SKI.
A community information meeting took place on July 13 at the TKSV facilities.
After the initial fish stock assessment had to be canceled in May due to water levels, the survey finally took place on June 30. At the Old Danube Harbor (Alter Donauhafen), Ulrich Krafczyk from the Swabian Fisheries Association and Thomas Lechner from IBF UMWELT explained the fish species of the Danube and the „electrofishing“ method to interested attendees, while remaining available to answer questions.
On December 1, a community participation round was held as an online meeting. Unfortunately, an in-person event was not possible due to the pandemic situation. During the session, Ralf Klocke (LEW) presented the current status of the planning for CityRiver and the bed stabilization. You can find the direct link to Mr. Klocke’s presentation here. Sebastian Blass explained the riverbank widening near the ‚Wildnis‘ area. The direct link to Mr. Blass’s presentation can be found here.
The minutes of the meeting are available here.
Ludwig Martin Büttner, from the Rowing Waters Department of the German Rowing Association, has provided the following suggestions:
The docking and exit point suitable for rowing boats should not be located at the mouth of the Wörnitz river. Otherwise, in stronger currents, rowing boats would have to perform a maneuver involving nearly a full turn to enter the Wörnitz. In flowing waters, rowing boats fundamentally dock facing upstream. If possible and if there is sufficient space, the „staircase facility“ should be located in the area of the old harbor, as shown in our sketch.
On July 22, residents of Pappelweg, Erlenweg, and Schützenring gathered to discuss the potential location for a riverbank widening. Flood protection was a matter of great importance to the numerous participants. Ralf Klocke, project manager at LEW Wasserkraft, pointed out that only measures coordinated with the Water Management Office and those that guarantee flood protection would be implemented.
To identify suitable locations for the riverbank flattening, test pits will be excavated in August. These are intended to provide information regarding the soil conditions in the areas. Furthermore, the attendees—echoing the concerns of Schützenring residents in early March—emphasized the importance of preserving the existing trees around the flood relief channel. This request is already being incorporated into the planning by the responsible Neuburg Institute for Floodplain Ecology.
In a further round of talks, the city of Donauwörth and LEW invited residents from the Donauspitz area and the opposite riverbank. Following a presentation of ideas and design proposals—using the mouth of the Nau in Günzburg as an example—numerous points were raised by the participants. In a lively discussion, those present explicitly supported the plan to make the Donauspitz accessible and to create an engaging experience for children. Furthermore, the request was made to preserve ‚Gebhard-Platz‘ directly at the Donauspitz.
The minutes of the meeting can be found here.
On July 7, a meeting took place between project manager Ralf Klocke (LEW Wasserkraft), City Marketing Manager Christiane Kickum, and the Donauwörth Fisheries Consortium, represented by the Härpfer family. The two most important goals of the project regarding fisheries are the creation of spawning grounds and habitats for juvenile fish and their food sources (micro-organisms). In order to demonstrate the project’s success in achieving these goals, a fish stock assessment must be conducted in advance. This requires the consent and assistance of the local fishers, which was pledged by the consortium.
The minutes of the meeting can be found here.
It has long been known in rowing circles that the passage at Donauwörth (km 2,511.9 to km 2,508.2) is difficult to navigate due to fluctuating water levels. Consequently, both the German and Bavarian Rowing Associations will be actively contributing to the CityRiver project.
The memorandum can be found here.
On March 5, 2020, a meeting was held with the residents of Schützenring. During this meeting, the project was briefly presented, and the following requests from the local residents were recorded:
January 31 – February 28, 2020: „CityRiver“ Exhibition and Workshop
at the LEW Energieladen, Reichsstraße 49

On December 14, 2019, water sports enthusiasts, water users, emergency services, and nature and sustainability associations met to discuss a sustainable and holistic transformation for the benefit of the river habitat within the urban area—for the sake of animals, plants, citizens, and guests of the city alike—and to develop individual ideas and suggestions for the City of Donauwörth.
The summary of results can be found here.
