Project
At the beginning of October 2019, the starting signal for the pilot project "CityRiver" was given in Donauwörth.
The project area in and along the Danube extends from the "wilderness" or Donauspitz until the confluence with the river Zusamn, i.e. between river kilometre 2510 and 2508.6. The "CityRiver" project is scheduled until 2023 and is funded by LIFE, an EU program for the environment, nature conservation and climate policy. The total cost of the project is about four million euros. The EU will cover 55 percent of the eligible costs.
The project aims to enhance rivers as a habitat in urban areas. In such sections, rivers are usually forced into a narrow riverbed with steep, artificial banks. As a result, the river is difficult to access for citizens and there are hardly any suitable habitats for flora and fauna. An additional problem is that the river bed has the tendency to carve deeper. The "City River" project aims to counteract this in the areas of ecology, hydraulic engineering and socio-economy.
