2010 tourism theme: “Uniquely Donauwoerth”
Embraced by five different kinds of countryside, nestled into the spot where the Danube and Woernitz rivers meet and tucked into the hills of the Swabian Alb and Franconian Jura, the town of Donauwoerth has been well-favoured by its location. The marvellous view from the edge of the Ries, a meteorite impact crater, stretches far and wide into the Danube-Lech plain. If the ancient walls of what once was a Free Town of the Holy Roman Empire could speak, they would tell remarkable stories of days long gone and whisper stirring tales passed down through the ages.A town of many talents, it has become known as ‘the town of Kaethe-Kruse dolls’, ‘the warm heart of northern Swabia’, ‘the Bavarian-Swabian Danube gem on the German Romantic Road’ or ‘the helicopter capital of Europe’.
What catches the eye first are the colourful façades of the Donauwoerther Reichsstrasse, the town’s ‘living room’ bearing witness to its proud imperial past. When taking a stroll through the old town, an air of history is all around: historical buildings, churches, towers, winding alleys, remnants of the ancient town wall and an excavation site. A bit further up the Woernitz river, a lovely little island can be spotted. By the end of this walk, both residents and visitors will know what is meant by 'typically Donauwoerth'.
Over 80 bridges and numerous wells and fountains add to the charm of the town on the river. But there is more: art-historical treasures, masterly feats of architecture, town-planning peculiarities as well as an abundant museum scene all beckon any passers-by to stay and take a closer look. A variety of festivals and cultural highlights add to the diversity and uniqueness of this town.
How about a boat ride on the Danube? A game of golf on a course with magnificent views? A cycling tour or a walk along the river? A moderate hike on hilly terrain or a more challenging steep climb? Or how about fishing in southern Germany’s largest unbroken stretch of stream? If that is what you enjoy, then Donauwoerth is the place to be!
Bathed in sunshine, charming Donauwoerth appears to be bursting with a vast array of cheerful colours; veiled by the fog rising from the river, it takes on a mysterious air; decked out in festive lights during the Christmas season, it is simply enchanting.
“Uniquely Donauwoerth” is our town’s tourism theme of 2010 reflecting the fact that Donauwoerth is truly one of a kind - in its significant, original and typical way.
