Incredibly rich: the Fuggers in Donauwörth

Guided tour through Donauwörth
The famous Fugger family of Augsburg, a family of merchants, did more than just making European mercantile history. They were unbelievably rich and powerful. In 1536, Anton Fugger, who is said to be the wealthiest of all Fuggers, became administrator of Donauwörth. In 1537, he built himself a representative two-storey Renaissance building with Gothic gables, right in the heart of the town. The massive building on the upper part of Donauwörth's main street, the "Reichsstraße", is the seat of the administration of the Donau-Ries district today. Only few, but high-carat remains of this splendorous design can still be seen today. An informative exhibition on the Fuggers and the "Reichspflege" can be visited on the first floor of the building during the opening hours of the District Administration.
