Große Kreisstadt Donauwörth - barrierefreie Version

Wappen Donauwörth

The formative influence of Donauwörth's both brilliant and sorrowful history can be found at every turn in town.
Donauwörth, first a small island settlement (Wörth = archiaic for island) as a result of the period of mass migration, experienced historical significance by the construction of a bridge over the Danube in 977.
Donauwörth soon became an intersection of important traffic routes both by land and by water and was, as a result, a highly coveted and disputed trading centre in the Upper German region. Due to the rapid economic rise in the Middle Ages, Donauwörth was the only Swabian town on the Danube to earn the title of "Free Imperial Town" (Freie Reichsstadt) in the year 1301.
